PMTCT distribution of reagents by the Virology Unit of Libreville
03 June 2015
As part of its initiatives for women and with the support of the Ministry of Health for the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), FSBO made a second donation of reagents at the Virology Unit of the National Laboratory for Public Health in Libreville.
They will enable the detection of viral charge or presence of the virus in the bloodstream of new-born babies whose mothers were HIV-positive, and therefore to put in place an appropriate treatment plan. Last December, our first distribution allowed 313 samples to be taken.
We wish to remind you that these tests are indispensable, free and must be conducted at 6 weeks, 9 months and 18 months for all children of HIV-positive mothers.
Furthermore, it is VITAL for a pregnant HIV- positive woman to receive treatment because without it, she stands over 30% chance of transmitting the virus to her new-born child.
Don’t forget: early detection raises the efficiency of treatment and reduces the risk of transmission of the virus to the people you love!
